This is a visual petition. Congress needs to see more than just a signature to convince them how important paid family leave and affordable childcare are for kids, moms, and dads.
America is behind our peer nations by failing to provide Paid Family Leave & Affordable Childcare. Join the effort to send visual petitions to Congress to fight for humane policies on family leave and affordable childcare. American families deserve better! Are you ready to effect change?
Through thepetition we also work for gender equality & equal pay by asking for Family Leave not just Maternity Leave. Backing my project at any level sends real American family stories to Congress. Let’s compel action.
This visual petition will send photos, stories, and signatures to Congress to advocate for humane policies on family leave and affordable childcare. Katie will be creating a book that will include the portraits of real families and their stories to inspire change. A set of postcards (like an unbound book) featuring these families will be sent to the President and members of Congress.
About Katie Ring (Project creator): Photographer, Activist, Tea addict. Like every 21st century woman, I thought I could have it all: work AND family, love AND a career, personal AND professional fulfillment, together in balance. But the truth is so much more complicated. With an MFA and manager level creative position at a Fortune 500 company, I was a rising star—but then motherhood changed everything. Before I even started showing, I was “mommy-tracked” by my manager. I was questioned about doctor’s appointments, scrutinized about my maternity leave, and felt for the first time that maybe having-it-all wasn’t possible.
Ironically, when I finally had a supportive manager and had negotiated a flexible work arrangement, I was laid off. My two children were just 2.5 years and 6 months old. I couldn’t afford childcare on unemployment and I couldn’t interview or job search without childcare. I was stuck. So I accepted a lower paying, less fulfilling, and less flexible job with a longer commute. I rarely saw my own children during the workweek. And after six months at the new job, struggling with childcare payments, I started to get angry.
I knew there had to be a better way. And I channeled that anger into something more productive: passion. I now work as a freelancer, which is a much better solution for my family. But what about other families? Other moms? Other dads? Other kids? “I’m fighting on their behalf.”
I’m channeling my hurt, anger, and frustration into something good. Something that will help make change happen. If you are hurt, frustrated, or angry, or feel this way on behalf of someone you love, I invite you to put your energy into this project with me. I want to change the way we support families in this country.
My experiences have ignited a fiery passion to fight for change. Will you join me?
This portrait project will send photos and a petition to Congress and the President designed to advocate for humane policies on family leave and affordable childcare. Mine is not the worst story out there, but it is all too common. American families deserve better—especially since we live in the only industrialized first-world nation that does not guarantee any Paid Maternity Leave. I am fed up enough to effect change. Are you?
Katie has started a crowdfunding campaign with a goal of raising $20,000. The funds will be used: to hire a graphic designer wth direct mail and book deisgn experience. A compelling book and packaged postcard set needs professional graphic design! Self-publishing a book has a higher cost per book than you’re used to seeing at the bookstore. Additionally there are 535 members of congress plus our new president, so that’s a lot of cards to print, package, and ship. There will be crowdfundung fees and taxes on the funds raised. Lastly any remaining portion of funds will be used to partitally subsidze the expensive photograhy equipment and studio space that I need to execute this project.
