The Vusizwe Sika Menziwa Development Foundation Trust from rural Transkei in the Eastern Cape, will be launching initiatives to raise money for a variety of community upliftment projects that will benefit people from this overlooked region.

The area is located halfway between Idutywa & Engcobo in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The province is known as the land of legends as struggle stalwarts Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Steve Biko, Walter & Adelaide Sisulu, Oliver Reginald Tambo, Chris Hani and many others were born and raised here. Despite being the home to many important activists that were responsible for change in South Africa, the new dispensation has failed the region as little had been done here to improve the lives of the residents.

The roughly 150 square kilometer area consist mainly residential land and homesteads and is home to approximately 300 000, mostly unemployed people. The major source of income is government grants, child grants and small scale subsistence farming. In some areas there are no medical, water and sanitation provision and schools are scarce, with children having to walk 10 kilometres and more to meet their basic education needs

The one thing that the community owns in abundance is land, space and open ground. This has inspired the Trust to come up with the unique idea of building gold standard Eco trails for the use of Mountain bikers, Hikers, Runners, Campers, Backpackers and Nature lovers. The trails will employ a number of people and help to boost the economic outlook of the community as they will be the source of supplies and services to the trails.

In conjunction with the biking and hiking trails, people will be attracted to local accommodation, local eateries and most importantly visit areas that has been significant in the formative years of Nelson Mandela, through to his final resting place and the Nelson Mandela Museum as the trails passes by many of these landmarks

The Vusizwe Trust has just launched their first initiative, LAND OF HEROES ECO TRAILS a crowd funding campaign on Indigogo All the funds raised will support design and construction of the trails network and also assist in the Trust’s work to protect the communities in this region, transform their lives and build a world where there are more economic opportunities
