3Bee is the first Italian project born from the idea of three researchers for the Protection of the hives and environmental protection. More Specifically, the project 3Bee Concerns the construction of an electronic device for monitoring the Hives of Apis mellifera. The device will monitor the bees’ needs by checking temperature, humidity, smell of such Hives. 3Bee’s revolutionary goal is to find new treatments to counter-act the massive bee die-off.
Bees not only contribute daily to preserve and propagate many plants, but supply us with valuable products such as honey, propolis, wax and pollen.
Deaths of bees
In recent years the integrity of bee colonies has been increasingly threatened by many factors, both natural and human. In many European bee mortality has exceeded 50%!
Pesticides: are really so dangerous?
Of course! All chemical substances released into the environment may come into contact with bees. Bottinando nectar and pollen, bees can carry and accumulate many of these substances inside their hives causing the sudden collapse of the entire hive (Colony Collapse Disorder).
Chemical treatments to stem parasites and bacteria
Before the arrival in Italy of the mite Varroa Destructor (1981), in beekeeping were very few cases where it was necessary to use chemical trattramenti. Now in the market there are chemicals to combat varroamite disease now essential for the survival of the hive. In addition to these products, there are also those antibiotics used to cope with bacterial infections. Although many of these compounds are strictly prohibited in the European Union due to the vast amount of chemical residues found in the wax and honey, in many non-EU countries are allowed!
Commercial honey imported, certificated and polluted
Have you ever stopped to read the labels of honey you buy at the supermarket? If there is ever, try this. It will amaze you read the honey that we put on our tables comes from foreign countries where regulation is lax. What results is a poor quality honey whose origin can neither be traced nor guaranteed Not all honey is good! Be careful!
THE SOLUTION: The project 3Bee
Device & Sensors
It includes 2 types of sensors: the first for the detection of the temperature and moisture internal to the hive and the second for the measurement of the increase in weight of the beehive (balance). With the first sensor you can get an overview on the state of health of the hive. With the second it will go, instead, to monitor productivity, necessity and serious accidents in the hive.
It consists of sensors for the detection of air quality, oxygen, dioxide carbon. In analogy to what is done for other types of animal farms are the first alarm instrument in the case of diseases and virus diseases.
The device are connected some microphones optimized for the acquisition of EM ission sound of beehive sounds. The device allows you to capture the intensity and the sound spectrum of the vibration of the bees, ranging from 50 Hz to 600 Hz. The sound language of the bees will be able to predict the swarming of bees well in advance as well as listen to the birth of new queens.
The device is equipped with sensors capable of analyzing the intensity and spectrum of ambient light. Thanks to this sensor will be able to evaluate the influence of the light spectrum foraging activity of bees.
Niccolo Calandri is an electrical engineer, a doctoral student at the Politecnico di Milano. Niccolo says “I realized in collaboration with MIT and NASA cryogenic optical systems for satellite applications. With this knowledge I am developing for 3Bee an ultra innovative system for the protection of bees.”
Riccardo Balzaretti is a biologist, beekeeper and PhD student of the University ‘Insubria. Riccardo says “For some years I am passionate about the fascinating world of beekeeping. I deal, for 3Bee, the development of predictive algortmi in order to improve the health of the hive.”
Eliah Nipoti, food technologist and gourments. He is passionate about the analysis of the dynamics of the food industry. He manages the quality ‘of service and of 3Bee processes.
Eliah Nipoti has started a crowdfunding campaign with a goal of raising € 15,000 in order to bring 3Bee to live!
Thank you so much for any help you’re able to give. And please forward this campaign to anyone you think may be interested and willing to help.
